Medallion Press, a division of Medallion Media Group, Inc., has acquired a new anthology of transgressive fiction edited by Chuck Palahniuk, Richard Thomas, and Dennis Widmyer titled “Burnt Tongues: Stories from ChuckPalahniuk.net.” Palahniuk is best known for the powerfully subversive novel “Fight Club” (Oct. 2005, WW Norton), which was made into a major motion picture in 1999 starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.

Throughout his career, Palahniuk has made it his mission to bring people back to books. In the past few years, he has taken this mission one step further by instructing people to write books. The anthology, “Burnt Tongues: Stories from Chuck Palahniuk.net”, features transgressive short stories from twenty of Palahniuk’s online writing workshop students, whose origins span the United States and the UK. The stories they write are as eclectic as the authors themselves, with titles like “Zombie Whorehouse,” “Mind and Soldier,” and “Engines, O-Rings, and Astronauts,” but each has the common thread of a minimal writing style like Palahniuk’s.

Fellow anthologists Dennis Widmyer and Richard Thomas joined Chuck in critiquing, selecting, and editing “Burnt Tongues: Stories from Chuck Palahniuk.net.” Writer and film director Dennis Widmyer is the webmaster and creator of ChuckPalahniuk.net: A Writer’s Cult. Author and editor Richard Thomas’s “Storyville” column at “LitReactor” has gathered an interactive and passionate following.

“Burnt Tongues: Stories from Chuck Palahniuk.net” is scheduled to release in August 2014.

1. Does this flashback shed light on the character(s) and the present story in a significant way?
2. Is it a scene with dialogue and action, preferably showing characters in conflict?
3. Does the story slip into and out of the flashback as quickly as possible?
4. Is the first sentence of the flashback compelling?
5. Is it written in simple past tense rather than past perfect (example: “walked” vs. “had walked”)?

If you’ve polished your flashback to perfection but it still feels like an interruption, cut it out and shed light on your character(s) and plot through the present scene instead.
